Hall & Landing — Deep Green with White Woodwork, Surrey

Halls, stairs and landings are the hardest-working surfaces in any house and the most awkward to paint properly, because much of the work happens at height over a staircase. A strong colour like this one also needs the woodwork cut in cleanly against it — there is nowhere for a wavering line to hide. Safe access and careful preparation account for most of the time on a job like this. See interior painting.

Bedroom in a Surrey Cottage — Sage Green with Exposed Beams

Older cottage properties bring uneven walls and original timber, and both need a different approach to modern plasterboard. Beams are cut in by hand rather than masked, and the wall finish is usually chosen to be forgiving of an imperfect surface rather than to highlight it. See interior painting.

Master Bedroom — Modern Grey with Recessed Lighting

Downlighters are unforgiving. They throw light across the ceiling and walls at a shallow angle, which shows up every missed filling and every roller mark. Rooms with recessed lighting need more preparation than the same room with a pendant fitting, not less. See interior painting.

Wallpapering — Before & After, Surrey

A patterned paper like this one has to be set out before the first drop is hung, so the repeat lands sensibly on the focal wall and at the corners. The wall underneath was prepared and sized first — old adhesive left in place is the most common reason seams open up a few weeks later. See wallpapering.

Hallway Fitted Wardrobes — Cream Panel Doors

Built-in joinery is painted by hand, not sprayed on site, and panel doors have to be worked in the right order — mouldings, panels, then rails and stiles — so the finish lays off evenly without ridges at the joins. See interior painting.

Exterior Render — Before & After, Surrey

The transformation in a job like this is mostly preparation. Render is cleaned down, loose or blown material removed, cracks cut out and filled, and porous areas stabilised before any coating goes on. The masonry paint is the last and least difficult part. See exterior painting.

Cottage Exterior with Bay Window — Before & After, Surrey

A property like this combines two different jobs: masonry that needs a breathable weatherproof coating, and timber joinery around the bay that needs treating, priming and finishing separately. Attic Room — Bold Orange Transformation, London

Strong, saturated colours very often need a third coat to achieve an even depth, particularly over a lighter previous colour. Where that is the case we say so in the quote rather than discovering it halfway through the room. See interior painting.
